چکیده

The topological term in the effective action for the electrically neutral BCS system is discussed. It is applied for the calculation of the transverse force acting on the vortex in the limit of the smooth vor-tex core and vanishing interlevel distance in the vortex core. The controversy between the topological terms in cond-mat/9703124 and cond-mat/9411047 is resolved.

Vortex Dynamics within the BCS Theory

Based on the BCS theory we outline a conventional path integral derivation of the transverse force and the friction for a vortex in a superconductor. The derivation is valid in both clean and dirty limits at both zero and finite temperatures. The transverse force is found to be precisely as what has been obtained by Ao and Thouless using the Berry’s phase method. The friction is essentially the...

Quantum Dynamics of Topological Singularities: Feynman’s Influence Functional Approach

Starting from the microscopic theory of Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) for the fermionic superfluids, we show that the vortex dynamics can be followed naturally by extending Feynman’s influence functional approach to incorporate the transverse force. There is a striking mutual independence of the transverse and longitudinal influences: The former has the topological origin and is insensitive t...

Divergent Vortex Mass in a Superconducting Film in Proximity to a Metal

We consider a moving vortex in a two dimensional superconductor located at a distance d from a metallic overlayer. Starting from the microscopic imaginary time action we integrate out the electronic degrees of freedom to obtain a low energy, long wavelength effective action for the vortex. We focus our attention on the vortex kinetic energy and derive a general expression for the vortex mass. W...

We describe the influence of the gapless, nodal, fermionic quasiparticles of a two-dimensional dwave superconductor on the motion of vortices. A continuum, functional formalism is used to obtain the effective vortex action, after the fermions have been integrated out. At zero temperture (T ), the leading terms in the vortex action retain their original form, with only a finite renormalization o...
